This friend of the shelter started a spay/neuter reimbursement fund for them because, as she said, “they need help finding permanent loving homes also”. So, spay/neuter fees will be waived on all dogs who have been available for adoption for over 30 days, until this fund is depleted. At this time the spay/neuter reimbursement fees are still being waived for the felines. We will continue to waive the spay/neuter fees until the Linda Hedges/Mary Ellinger Memorial fund is depleted. We have truly seen a dramatic increase in the feline adoptions since we’ve been able to waive the spay/neuter fees for them, let’s see if it helps with their barking friends. Did you know… What is the fastest way to rehome a dog? Is the fastest way necessarily the best way to rehome your furkid? The fastest way is to surrender him to a shelter—but that’s not necessarily the best way. While shelters do their best to help the animals in their care, some shelters do not have the capacity or space to take in your pet immediately and you’ll need to make an appointment for surrender. Some shelters are even having to make appointments to come in to the facility. Another thing to consider is if that pet is one that the shelter will be able to rehome quickly or will it become a long-term resident of the shelter. Along with asking what is the fastest way to rehome your pet, a good question to ask is what’s the best way for you to do it.

Giving Your Dog The Best Chance At A Happy Home: It can be a heart-wrenching decision to give up your pet. If you find that you have no other option, give your dog the best chance at a new life—and give yourself peace of mind—by making sure he goes to an excellent home. If you can find a reputable, no-kill, private rescue that will take him, that can be a good choice. The problem is that many such rescues, like no-kill shelters, are at capacity, so finding one with an open spot can be a challenge. Another option is to rehome your dog yourself. Depending on the type and age of your pet, this can be super fast or can take some time, but it is an option. There are many resources available to help you in the process of finding the perfect home. Your local shelter can assist you if you choose that option or even if you’re still not 100% sure about rehoming him. If you must rehome your pet, do it in a way that will allow him to have the happy, healthy life he deserves. Knowing you did what was best for him will be well worth the time and effort.

We’re looking forward to tomorrow, Saturday, May 11th, and our “Nail Day”! Bring your furry friend in and get his or her nails trimmed, trims are $6 (which includes sales tax). We hope to see you all there from 1pm until 3pm! Our special guest Nail Trimmers will be Amy Strauch of Four Winds Animal Clinic and Misty of Misty’s Pet Care! All proceeds benefit the McCook Humane Society. As per state and city ordinances, You must have proof that your Fur-Kid is up to date on his/her Rabies vaccination and they have their tag (or you have other proof), and that your pet is on a leash (please no retractable leashes).

Did Ya Know: Disaster preparedness isn’t just for shelters and rescues. As pet owners, it’s our responsibility to plan for the worst to ensure our pets have the best possible outcome during a crisis. Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help you prepare:
Make a Plan. By creating a plan for you and your pets, it will minimize stress and worry during an emergency. It’s important to remember that if it isn’t safe for you to stay in your home during an emergency, it’s not safe for your pets. If your local officials ask you to evacuate, your pet should evacuate too! Prepare your pet’s evacuation plan. Evacuating with a pet can be difficult due to many public shelters and hotels not allowing pets. Make a list of safe places to take your pets before an emergency happens. Remember to include your pets in evacuation drills. Get your pets comfortable entering carriers or getting into a vehicle with minimal stress. A very important detail is to choose designated caregivers. Prepare a plan with your friends, family, or neighbors to make sure someone is available to care for or evacuate your pet if you cannot. Always have an emergency kit for your pet. This should include: Several days of food, water, medicine, a first aid kit, collar/id tag/leash, grooming items, litterbox/poop bags and disinfecting spray, and a sturdy crate/carrier. Have a picture of you and your pet together, and keep familiar items as toys and bedding for your pet to make him/her feel as comfortable as possible.
Microchip your pet. Get your pet microchipped and ensure that your phone number and address are current.

Did you know… We know that every dog owner loves his dog and offers him the best he can. Sometimes, the issue is that every dog owner cares for his dog according to his knowledge and we do things that are not good for the dog but still, we do it because we think it is good for the dog. Whether you are planning to bring a dog home or you already have one, here are just a few suggestions on ways you can treat your dog to keep him safe and happy.

Fulfilling Dog’s Needs: Just like humans, dogs also have needs to live a full, happy and satisfied life. A lot depends on the breed, and age of the dog. In addition to providing him the basic necessities, you have also to ensure that he is receiving everything he needs to be happy and healthy. This includes your company, toys, chews, bed, exercise, veterinarian care, etc.

Be Kind and Generous: Always treat your dog kindly with love. Just like humans, dogs also have emotions and they can get hurt if you will treat them harshly. You can scold and correct your dog without being cruel.

Treat Him as a Dog: There are many people who think that dogs can completely and clearly understand what we try to communicate. That is not completely true because a dog understands only the things that his owner taught him. You have to treat him like a dog (even though he is our furkid), not as a human who understands every word coming out of your mouth.

Did ya know… Cupid is soon going to be upon us, and while next week we may once again talk about the dangers of chocolate, certain plants, gifts and decorations, have you ever considered making a special Valentine’s Day which includes your furkid? There are plenty of fun, exciting, and romantic dates for dog lovers out there, including some where your dogs (some cats can be a bit more difficult to take along) can go too. Look up the nearest dog friendly trail, or park. They are full of interesting sights and smells, particularly if you’re a dog, and room for running and playing games. You and your date can toss Frisbees, take a leisurely stroll with your dogs, or just kick back for some entertaining dog-watching as long as the temps allow it. Dog-friendly bars and restaurants. More and more establishments are realizing the value of setting a place at the table for dogs. Go shopping together. Pet stores are always dog-friendly zones; check out fun new products together, scope out the fish and birds available for sale, you may even get a little paw mani-pedi together! Are there any dog shows or performance competitions going on? Whether it’s a low-key obedience match or an exciting agility, dock diving, or herding trials, it’s a great place to bond over your passion. Go on a Picnic if weather permits (hey this is Nebraska, ya just never know). There is nothing more traditionally romantic that going on a picnic date, and it’s super easy to take the dog along.

Did you know… As the weather stays cold, we humans tend to stay inside where it’s warm. Many of us are lucky enough to enjoy winter comforts like heating, fireplaces, blankets, and warm places to sleep. But for small animals that live outside, such as cats and rodents, finding a cozy place to sleep isn’t as easy. This is why drivers often find cats in car engines looking for a warm place to hide from frigid temperatures. Of course, this behavior can be deadly for the animal. Luckily, there are some things you can do before driving off to check that no critters are hiding under your hood. Some examples are; banging on the hood of your car, honking your horn, opening and closing your hood, and covering your car. These things may help save a small animal’s life.

Did ya know… The 5 Second Rule applies for cold weather season also. If you place your hand (palm up) on the surface of where you plan on walking your pet, and you can’t comfortably hold it there for five seconds… then it is too cold to walk your dog on that surface. Same rule that applies through the summer months, applies through the cold season. Another thing to remember is to thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice. Some breeds like to be in the snow and colder weather, and the pet owners know to take extra precautions for them as the weather dips further. One thing that sometimes gets forgotten is their pads, keep a close eye on them. We sometimes get in a hurry, but need to remember these things.

Come check out our “Adopt-A-Kennel” program where our local individuals and businesses can show the community their support for our area’s homeless animals. This month’s (DECEMBER) Adopt-A-Kennel is from another anonymous wonderful friend who is asking for a Christmas Miracle. Her wish is that “All of our furkids find wonderful and forever homes before the holidays”. Ask about our “Adopt-A-Kennel Program”… It’s the perfect way to honor someone or memorialize them by adopting a kennel in their name. You can also sponsor an adoption for one of our available pets if you’d like to help out in that way.

The Christmas Spirt of giving is all round at the McCook Humane Society! So many ways of giving… Come on in and grab a gift for your furkid from under our tree. We don’t want any furry family member being without a sweater so we’ve got a Free Sweater Giveaway going on! We’ve got a “Giving Tree”. If you’re struggling right now with pet related needs, you can put those needs in a Christmas card (labeled with a Reindeer name) on this tree (and remain anonymous). If you’re wanting to help someone in need, grab a card, help someone in need. We’ll make sure that the folks get their donated items.

We’ve had some very loving people come in and sponsor adoptions to help make sure that our temporarily homeless furry friends find homes for the holidays. Come on in and see who’s adoption fees have been completely paid for: Runa, Mr. Kat, Eeyore, Apricat, Sir Pumpkin Furchill, and Junapi.

Spay/Neuter Fees waived… A wonderfully generous anonymous donor has decided that it was time to let the dog’s at the shelter get help in finding homes also. This friend of the shelter started a spay/neuter reimbursement fund for them because, as she said, “they need help finding permanent loving homes also”. So, spay/neuter fees will be waived on all dogs who have been available for adoption for over 30 days, until this fund is depleted. At this time the spay/neuter reimbursement fees are still being waived for the felines. We will continue to waive the spay/neuter fees until the Linda Hedges/Mary Ellinger Memorial fund is depleted. We have truly seen a dramatic increase in the feline adoptions since we’ve been able to waive the spay/neuter fees for them, let’s see if it helps with their barking friends. If you’d like to make a contribution to help either of these funds continue, please make sure that you let us know that it’s for the fund. Did ya know… Holidays are a time for good food and fun, and lots of it! But, just like children, pets don’t always know what can be dangerous for them to eat or drink. That box of chocolates on the coffee table? It seems like a great snack.  It’s fun to grab a few when you’re watching TV. Your friends love to come to your house because the candy dish is always full. Well, someone else loves that chocolate, too, but instead of satisfying his sweet tooth, he could die from eating the chocolate. We are talking about your dog, your favorite furry family member. Our pets have a knack for getting into mischief, but it is up to us to keep them safe.  Medicine, chocolate and plants are some of the most common items that can poison our pets. A special and important project could be creating a refrigerator magnet, with the emergency number for your vet, as well as a list of some of the most common poisonous items, symptoms of poisoning and basic first aid tips, is a great way to share the knowledge you’ve gained about pet poisoning.  Do a search on the Internet to find a list of the most common poisonous plants eaten by pets, what to do if your pet is poisoned and first aid for pets. Get creative, have fun with it! Design a colorful background and use graphics or clip art to give your list an artistic flair. Remember that with the holidays upon us, there are most likely more sweets and treats lying around and we need to keep our “furry friends” from getting into them.

Santa will be visiting the McCook Humane Society during Nail Day and you can take this opportunity to come get your “Pet Pics with Santa” done. “Scooters” will be on hand with their Pup Cups for your furkids. Our Special Guest Nail Trimmers will be Amy Strauch of Four Winds Animal Clinic and Misty of Misty’s Pet Care! As per state and city ordinances, you must have proof that your Fur-Kid is up to date on his/her Rabies vaccination and they have their tag (or you have other proof), and that your pet is on a leash (please no retractable leashes).

Did you know… Nail trimming is essential for maintaining good health. If a dog’s nails are allowed to grow, they will curl over into a spiral shape; walking will become increasingly painful to the dog as they grow, putting pressure on the dogs toes (a bit like walking in shoes that are too small). Uncut nails may curl so far that they pierce the paw pad, leading to infection and debilitating pain. If one does not trim a dog’s nails on a monthly basis the quick will grow along with the nail, making it nearly impossible to cut properly. You can bring your furchild out to our monthly “Nail Day” at the Shelter. December’s is going to be so much fun, this Saturday, Dec. 9th, from 1pm until 3pm!
