Main Kennel Grand Opening Date Set!

The McCook Humane Society will be closed on Saturday, August 30th, (we’re always closed on Sundays), and Monday, September 1st, in observance of Labor Day. Have a very fun, happy and safe Labor Day holiday weekend.

We’re really looking forward to Saturday, September 13th. It’s our monthly “Nail Day”, but this one will be special. It’s going to be when we have our grand opening celebration and show off our newly remodeled Main Kennel! We have a lot of fun in store, so we hope to see you there… If you haven’t come in to see what the Main Kennel looks like now, you should. We still need your help, we’ve still got to pay for this project. How can you help? At this point, we are in need of financial help, as this has been a huge undertaking. Please contact us about the major Challenge Grant going on, go to our website at www.mccookhumanesociety.com (you can donate right on our homepage), or just give us a call for more information. Give us a call at 308-345-2372, check it out on our FB page or our website. Thank you to all who have helped in any way that you can.

At this time the spay/neuter reimbursement fees are still being waived for the felines. We will continue to waive the spay/neuter fees until the Linda Hedges/Mary Ellinger Memorial fund is depleted. We have truly seen a dramatic increase in the feline adoptions since we’ve been able to waive the spay/neuter fees for them, let’s see if it helps with their barking friends. If you’d like to make a contribution to help either of these funds continue, please make sure that you let us know that it’s for the fund. You can stop by, call us, email us, Facebook us, or reach out on the “Contact Us” form on our website for help.

Did you know… How can I teach my puppy not to bite? Several times daily for a few weeks, let your pup mouth/play bite until he exerts more pressure than usual. Then say, “Ouch!” loud enough that he’s surprised and stops biting. At the same time, you should stop playing for a few seconds so he associates the end of play with exerting too much pressure. Repeat until he plays with only soft mouthing. If he doesn’t get the idea, just stop playing or move away whenever he bites too hard. He’ll learn soon enough that mouthing too hard ends play.

Happy Tails! The following pets found their new forever home: Sir Squiggles – Lord of the Coconut, Stardust, Molly, and Ziggy!

September Grand Opening TBA and Dog Ownership Advice

“Kennel Project” update… we are almost a “GO” for opening the Main Kennel back up. Can we get a “Woof Woof”? We are still trying to pay for all of this but we’ll be opening the main kennel back up on Monday, August 4th. Not only that, but we’ll be returning to our normal business hours of Monday through Friday from 2pm and Saturdays from Noon until 4pm. We will no longer be closed on Tuesday afternoons. Our Official “Grand Opening Celebration” date is TBA. Be looking for a big September event. How can you help? At this point, we are in need of financial help, as this has been a huge undertaking. Please contact us about the major Challenge Grant going on, go to our website at www.mccookhumanesociety.com (you can donate right on our homepage), or just give us a call for more information. We’re looking forward to our regularly scheduled “Nail Day” here at the McCook Humane Society on Saturday, August 9th, from 1pm until 2pm.

Did you know… Dog ownership is not something to be entered into lightly. Owning a dog is a long-term emotional and financial commitment. Before deciding that a certain dog is right for you, you must make an honest assessment as to whether your home is right for any dog. Are you ready for a dog? Evaluate your lifestyle… If you get a dog, he (or she) will become a part of your life. You need to make sure that he’s suited for your lifestyle. For example, if you are athletic, you will probably not be happy with a dog that has a low energy level. If you are extremely neat (or have allergies), you will probably want a dog that doesn’t shed much. All aspects of your family’s life – hobbies, activities, personalities, schedules – should be evaluated before you get a dog. Based on your evaluation, determine what qualities you want in a dog. Consider size, energy level, grooming needs, trainability and temperament. Do you want a guard dog or a lap dog? Is it important that your dog get along with children? If you rent your home, are there restrictions on height, weight or breed? Answer these questions now – once you bring a dog home, it can be heartbreaking (for both you and the furkid) to realize that you made the wrong choice.

Come check out our “Adopt-A-Kennel” program where our local individuals and businesses can show the community their support for our area’s homeless animals. This month’s (July) Adopt-A-Kennel is from Dennis Reitz and in memory of “Emma”. Emma was Dennis’s best friend and companion for almost 11 years, since the day Emma adopted him at the McCook Humane Society. Emma has recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge and this is in honor and memory of her. We thank all of our sponsors for their continuing support. It’s the perfect way to honor someone or memorialize them by adopting a kennel in their name. Call us for more information or visit our website www.mccookhumanesociety.com for more information and to fill out a form online. You can also sponsor an adoption for one of our available pets if you’d like to help out in that way.

Did you know… If your dog gets out, don’t chase him or her, in most cases that just makes it a game. Instead, lie or sit on the ground and pretend that your are hurt. A few loud “owwws” really add to the performance. Your furkid will (in most cases) come back to see if you are okay. Then you’ve got the escape artist. In all cases, if you’ve got your pet’s ID tags up to date, he or she will make it home a lot sooner. You can even have your contact number etched into the back of the rabies tag if you only want one tag on your furry family member.

Did Ya Know… If you follow our local Social Media, and of course we here at the McCook Humane Society are privy to most of the calls and messages concerning lost or found pets in our area, it seems alarming how many wandering dogs you may see on any given day. I’d like to put a few kibbles out there for all of us to nibble on…

McCook City Ordinances require that there is a current rabies tag ON your pet’s collar. Identification, and proof of rabies. Two things that are simple to do and any responsible pet owner will do these things. Collars and tags can fall off, Microchips don’t. Consider getting your pet chipped. Keep your information current with the company, it doesn’t help one bit to get your pet microchipped if the information is registered and/or current.

Things happen. Storms, fireworks, etc… Whatever the case may be. In a split second, your pet is not where they are supposed to be. Hopefully you have a picture of them and can alert us. Then (in case we already aren’t acquainted with them), we know who to contact.

Really cool note that I wanted to add. That saying about taking a village to raise a child? It goes for the furry ones as well. There’s been an uplifting uptick in folks trying to find the owners of the escapees. The negative commenting has reduced dramatically. What does that say about this awesome community that we are blessed to be a part of? That we really are among some amazing and awesome people. One more thing. Over this past holiday weekend (historically the worst for many, especially furry family members), I was aware of, or had a part in 21 lost/found pets… TWO made it into the shelter. That speaks volumes for the teamwork of MPD, this community and the pet owners who were out looking for their pets who managed to escape during this past hectic holiday weekend. Good job!

Nail Day Saturday June 14th and Preparing for Fireworks

Our major undertaking, “The Kennel Project”, is fully underway and we’re over halfway there. Excitement is building and we are rallying our supporters. Please ask how you can help with this much needed renovation. We are still under construction, our Main Kennel, where the available dogs are normally housed, is being completely redone. Wow! This is not only a huge undertaking, but will be a much needed an impressive improvement for our temporarily homeless dogs canine friends as well as guests, volunteers and staff. How can you help? At this point, financial help would be wonderful, and you can go to our website at www.mccookhumanesociety.com and find where to donate right on our homepage. You can also watch for Challenge Grants, and fundraisers by our wonderful community businesses that are coming up. Give us a call at 308-345-2372, check it out on our FB page or our website. Thank you to all who have helped in any way that you can.

Nail Day in June will be Saturday June 14th, from 1pm until 2pm and will be held at 305 Seminole Drive, at Misty’s Pet Care, due to our ongoing construction project. Our special guest Professional Nail Trimmers will be Misty of course and Amy Strauch of Four Winds Animal Clinic. Nail Trims are $6 (which inc tax) or an item off of our Shelter Wish List. Please have your proof of current Rabies Vacc ready and your furkids on their leashes.

Spay/Neuter Fees waived, but for how long? A wonderfully generous anonymous donor has decided that it was time to let the dog’s at the shelter get help in finding homes also. This friend of the shelter started a spay/neuter reimbursement fund for them because, as she said, “they need help finding permanent loving homes also”. So, spay/neuter fees have been waived on all dogs who have been available for adoption for over 30 days, until this fund is depleted. Unfortunately, this fund is dangerously low, we’re actually at zero after the ones on the list are adopted. If you’d like to donate to this fund to keep it going, please reach out. We, and the temporarily homeless friends that have found homes because of this, truly appreciate you.

Did ya know… Now is the time to start thinking about fireworks and your pets. If your furkids are frightened by the big booms, please start now with preparations for the celebration. Set up the perfect spot in your home, with some kind of soothing noise where they have no view of the outside and the bright flashes of lights. Make sure that all of the ID is current, information up to date. In severe cases, now is the time to visit with your vet about something to keep your pet calm during the holiday. Before the celebration each evening, make sure you exercise him or her so they are just plain wore out… a sleepy dog stands a better chance of sleeping through it. Start prepping now for a more stress free Fourth of July holiday with your furry family members.

Did ya know: How Often Do You Bathe Your Dog?

That all depends on your pet.

Factors include: his hair coat, hair length, how often he gets dirty, where he lives (if he is indoor or outdoors most of the time), shedding cycle, and any underlying skin problem.

Some dogs need baths only a couple times a year while others need weekly grooming. It is beneficial to brush your dog about twice a week. Bathing your dog every month or two isn’t unreasonable, but some dogs will need more frequent cleanings.

A good rule of thumb is to bathe your pet only when his coat gets dirty or begins to smell “doggy”.

Did ya know:
Some Common Summer Hazards to Protect your Dog from:
Some dogs do get into trouble during the summer months. Now that warmer weather is here, families will be enjoying months of outdoor fun. Memorial Day Weekend is upon is. Summer holidays are perfect for barbeques, picnics and pool parties, and families will spend more time outside playing with their pets.
To make the summer more enjoyable, pet owners need to be aware of summertime hazards that can result in injury or illness to your pet. Preventing these hazards can help you and your dog enjoy the carefree days of summer without a trip to the emergency vet clinic.

Here are 4 common summer hazards that you need to protect your dog from:

  • Outdoor threats – There are many outdoor threats to dogs. Keep your pet leashed when you leave your yard. Taking your pet outdoors increases the likelihood of meeting other animals, so use a leash for your dog’s safety and theirs. A fight with another pet or with any wild animal can result in cuts, lacerations or severe punctures. If these wounds are left untreated, complications can result. Dog bites and lacerations from fights are among the most common emergencies I see in our practices. The wounds can be simple to extensive and cost hundreds of dollars to treat. You need to be prepared for this type of emergency. If this type of unplanned expense would be difficult for you, consider pet insurance.
  • Insects – Flies are more prevalent in the warmer months, and any injury to the skin, even something as small as an abrasion, can be a perfect place for flies to lay eggs. In a short time, these eggs hatch and become maggots. Keeping your pet clean and treating any skin injuries is crucial in avoiding maggot infestations.
  • Antifreeze – As summer approaches, many people change the antifreeze/water mixture in their vehicles. Antifreeze tastes sweet to pets and is highly toxic.
  • Trash – Summer heat speeds up decay and decomposition, especially in the trash. Keep your dog away from garbage areas. Pets that have access to garbage or compost can ingest molds that cause significant nervous system abnormalities including severe tremors or seizures. Eating trash can also cause vomiting and diarrhea or pancreatitis from eating spoiled foods.

Did you know… The McCook Humane Society is here to help. We do ask that when you need to surrender a pet, that you call us and make an appointment to surrender him or her. Why? Because we stay full, as most shelters do. Because a lot of folks are facing difficult times and facing economic challenges that they’ve never had to face before, forcing them to make the tough decision to let their furkid go. We would love to be able to take in every one that needs a new home right as soon as you make that difficult decision, however that is not feasible or possible with typically only 16 kennels available. We try. We try our best to help everyone that we can. We also offer helpful suggestions, advice, aide, food, anything within our power to help enable folks to be able to keep their furkid. There’s only so much that we can do, but we try. We’ll be offering more services soon, we are always looking to find more ways to help the community the way that they help us. The one thing we do not want to see is abandoned dogs, or animals brought in as “strays” that truly belong to the one bringing them in. That is never the solution. Whether you are dropping them in the country, or even at our door… we won’t have actual and factual information about the pets if you don’t surrender them properly. Now, at this time, we have had to close the Main Dog Kennel, our 16 runs. We do not have the room to house the dogs temporarily, and we are still at this point scrambling to place them, either in permanent or foster homes. Here’s the deal… we are making progress. Please bear with us. Give us a call at 308-345-2372, and we will help you with alternatives. We do know that it is hard right now, all shelters are full, we know this because they are all trying to come to us. We appreciate everyone’s patience. We also want to say a HUGE FURRY thank you to so many people and local businesses who are helping us with FUNdraisers, donations and manpower. Thank you!

We’ve had some very loving people come in and sponsor adoptions to help make sure that our temporarily homeless furry friends find forever homes. Come on in and see who’s adoption fees have been completely paid for: Benedict Cumberbark. This should help us Clear the Shelter, if even for a few days. Some wonderful pets have found truly amazing forever homes because of these generous people. We really need these furkids finding homes quickly because of the ongoing remodel to the Main Kennel.

Did ya know… Dogs need dental care, too! Unfortunately, dental hygiene for dogs is sometimes overlooked. Many people seem to just expect dogs to have bad breath, and few people brush their dogs’ teeth frequently enough. Dental hygiene is just as important to your dog’s overall health as things like nutrition, proper exercise and routine grooming. Help keep your dog healthy – pay attention to those pearly whites! Most importantly, make sure you keep up with vet exams. From time to time, a professional dental cleaning may be recommended. This requires general anesthesia. During the procedure, your dog’s teeth and gums will be examined closely for problems. The teeth will then be scaled and polished. If dental problems are noted, tooth extractions could become necessary. Alternatively, you may be referred to a veterinary dentist for specialty procedures. Some dogs need dental cleanings one or more times per year, while others can go longer. Be certain to follow your vet’s recommendations. And remember, what you do at home can really make all the difference.

Spay & Neuter Waived and Tees for Pets & Humans

Come check out our “Adopt-A-Kennel” program where our local individuals and businesses can show the community their support for our area’s homeless animals. This month’s (APRIL) Adopt-A-Kennel is from Judith Ladehaff and in memory of all of the furkids she’s cared for in her lifetime. Anyone who knows her, knows her reputation of taking in the special needs babes, the elderly, and they live out their lives in nothing but amazing love and comfort. She is wanting to take this month to give remembrance to all who will never leave her heart.

Our monthly “NAIL DAY” for April will be canceled due to the construction and limited access at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience and will hopefully see you for a special one in May.

Please ask how you can help with our ongoing “Kennel Project”. Give us a call at 308-345-2372, check it out on our FB page or our website. Thank you to all who have helped in any way that you can.

WISHLIST: We do have a special request. Does anyone happen to have a mannequin (just the top portion) that they’d donate to the shelter? We want to display our TShirts and we need a way to do so. Thank you in advance if you can locate one.

We’ve got shirts both humans and pets, all kinds of “bling”, stop by and check us out.

We’ve had some very loving people come in and sponsor adoptions to help make sure that our temporarily homeless furry friends find forever homes. Come on in and see who’s adoption fees have been completely paid for: Rhea and Benedict Cumberbark. This should help us Clear the Shelter, if even for a few days. Some wonderful pets have found truly amazing forever homes because of these generous people. We really need these furkids finding homes quickly because of the upcoming remodel to the Main Kennel.

Happy Tails! The following pets found their new forever home: Mr. Biggles!

“JUNO” is one of the sweetest girls you’ll ever meet, she is definitely a person pleaser and loves her belly rubs. She is best guess Staffy/Mastiff/Lab mix. Her puppies are also here, almost ready and available for adoption… Freya, Venus, and Hera. They all would love different and active homes! She’d make any family super happy.

“CLIFFORD” is a gorgeous big lovebug of a Pyrenees mix who came in as a stray that wasn’t claimed, so we don’t know anything about his past. This mellow young white fella walks extremely well on a leash, loves human interaction, really warms up to anyone he meets quickly and doesn’t seem to have a problem with anyone.

“BENEDICT CUMBERBARK” is a SPONSORED ADOPTION!! As a stray, this handsome male is now ready to thrive in a loving environment. He is a bit introverted at first, but his friendly demeanor and passion for the outdoors make him a great fit for an active family, and his love for walks and playtime is a wonderful way to build a strong bond.

“RHEA” is another SPONSORED ADOPTION!! Rhea is a lovely Boston terrier mix that was formerly a stray and was not claimed this girl has us laughing with silly antics she’s the queen of toys, she appears to enjoy everyone she meets.

“DRAGON” is an adult male shorthaired black cat who comes to us because his owner moved. This big guy would make a perfect companion for anyone looking for that quiet, supportive friend to tell all of their secrets to.
