Winter Hours, Wishlist and Shoot for the Shelter

Winter Hours: Through the months of January and February, The McCook Humane Society revert to our Winter Hours of Mon, Wed through Friday from 2pm until 5pm and Saturdays from Noon until 4pm. Closed to the public on Tuesdays and Sundays. If there are any emergencies, they will be taken care of.

Christmas Wishlist: The McCook Humane Society has a running Shelter Wishlist, and we thank each and every one of you who takes the time, spends the hard earned dollar, and gives from the heart to the temporarily homeless furry friends in our community. You can find this list on our Facebook Page, at the Shelter on the counter, or just send in a contact form or message, one will be sent right out to you. We’re also listed on Chewy, Amazon and a few other places. Our biggest needs at this time seem to be paper towels, cat litter and dry cat food.

NOT UGLY SWEATERS, just free ones. It’s that time of year… with the cold weather upon us, we’ve got our annual Free Sweater Giveaway going on. We don’t want to see any of our furry friends going without that extra protection, so drop on by and grab a free sweater from the basket.

We’re gearing up for a very special fundraising event. The Twentieth Annual (yes, you read that correctly, it is our TWENTIETH annual) “Shoot for the Shelter” Pool Tournament. It’s coming up fast. It’s on Saturday, January 31st, held at TJ’s Family Fun Center. Pre-Registration will start Monday, January 5th, and end on Monday, January 19th. You will be able to register online here on this page beginning January 5h. You may also register by stopping by the shelter during business hours, or calling us at 308-345-2372. Keep watching for more information.

Did you know… Once the weather stays cold, we humans tend to stay inside where it’s warm. Many of us are lucky enough to enjoy winter comforts like heating, fireplaces, blankets, and warm places to sleep. But for small animals that live outside, such as cats and rodents, finding a cozy place to sleep isn’t as easy. This is why drivers often find cats in car engines looking for a warm place to hide from frigid temperatures. Of course, this behavior can be deadly for the animal. Luckily, there are some things you can do before driving off to check that no critters are hiding under your hood. Some examples are; banging on the hood of your car, honking your horn, opening and closing your hood, and covering your car. These things may help save a small animal’s life.
